• Taming Necklines with Thread Guards

Thread guards are lightweight lingerie guards that are generally used for evening wear, transparent and lightweight fabrics and designs with narrow shoulder straps or when ribbon guards are too heavy, or more than one pair of guards is needed.

Claire Shaeffer from Vogue Patterns magazine shares her tips to making the perfect neckline.

    1. Sew the snap socket in place on the mark nearer the neckline.

    2. Knot a single strand of thread and hide the knot near the armscye. Use a hand-crocheted chain stitch to make the thread chain:

    • Sew a small backstitch to make a loop.

    • Hold the loop open over the thumb and index fi nger of the left hand; hold the thread in the needle taut with the right thumb and index fi nger. (1)

    • Use the middle fi nger of the left hand as a crochet hook to pull a new thread loop through the fi rst loop, allowing the fi rst loop to slip off the fi ngers. (2)

    • Open the new loop as you pull the previous loop taut on the chain. Continue making loops in this fashion until the chain is the desired length. (3)

    • To attach the ball of the snap, insert the needle into the eyelet before you fasten the thread at the end of the chain. Then insert the needle into the last thread loop. (4)

    • Secure the thread with several buttonhole or blanket stitches in the same eyelet. To hide the thread end, use the needle to make a few running stitches in the chain. Cut the thread.
