    Tips for sewing snaps.

    2 TIP FROM READY-TO-WEAR
When my daugher Melissa and I were shopping in New York last month, we saw this covered snap that was attached NOT by sewing through the holes in the snap, but by slipstitching the fabric cover to the garment.

IF YOU WANT MATCHING SNAPS, COVER THEM.

In the handbag section of fabric stores there are often two size. I used both. They are lightweight and come in brass and black. If you can’t find the larger snaps, they are available at www.FabricDepot.com.

When sewing on the snaps I matched the thread color to the snaps, brown for the brass snaps and black for the black snaps. I didn’t on the green. What do you think? Should I keep the green thread or change it to match the snap? On the pink, I used pink and thought it looked tacky so I re-sewed with the thread matching the snaps.

If your thread tangles, run it through bee’s wax. This will also make it stronger.

Keep your stitches close. I think it looks better where I did this.

Sew the prong half to the inside of the right side of the jacket. Then snap it to the other half. Lap over the left front and when in the proper place, unsnap holding the loose snap in position. Sew through one hole, then check position before anchoring another hole since you can still move it a bit at that point.

    TIPS FOR USING LARGE SNAPS

Cover snaps with your fashion fabric. Cut a small circle of fabric and run a basting stitch close to the outside edges. Place half of the snap in the middle and draw up the fabric. A little fabric glue or spray adhesive will hold the fabric to the snap. When you have covered each half, snap them together to make a hole for the ball and socket sides.
